Most roofs do not fail in the middle of the field where the shingles are. They fail where something interrupts them — a valley, a chimney, a pipe boot, the wall where a porch roof ties into the house. That is where the flashing lives, and flashing is what a rushed roof job skimps on, because nobody standing in the driveway can see it. On a JJ Construction roof the valleys, the wall lines and every penetration get flashed and lapped so water runs down and off instead of sideways and in. Once the old shingles come off, the decking underneath gets walked and checked, and soft or rotted sheathing gets replaced before new underlayment goes down — putting a new roof over bad decking just hides the problem for a few years.
